Railfan RPG
This idea began as a brainstorming session about what we liked most about the Pokémon video game series and what we felt was missing.
The biggest idea was "how to keep the game fresh". Back in our day, we our replay value came from endlessly defeating the final bosses, or restarting the game from scratch.
Another idea was that "for a game with hundreds of characters, everyone soon finds out what the best 20% are, from there, most only use six of those".
The game, Railfan RPG, solves these problems:
Keeping it Fresh — the world has subtle changes during each New Game Plus. The monsters in the world migrate. Quest-givers are in different locations and/or have different quests. The final bosses (and even random opponents) change their line-up to counter your "winning team".
Monster Rotation — when you trigger the New Game Plus (by beating the final bosses) the world responds to this by slightly changing the monsters your opponents use. This is meant to keep the game fresh, as well as a subtle nod to the player, because every trainer now knows your strategy is the best strategy.
